How do RNA splicing alterations contribute to inflammatory bowel diseases

Just published in Nature Communications: the team of Laurence Arbibe, in collaboration with an international network, has identified a major deregulation of RNA splicing in ulcerative colitis, a chronic inflammatory bowel disease. Splicing abnormalities target key genes of intestinal homeostasis and initiate the production of RNAs coding for toxic proteins such as progerin, involved in accelerated aging. Mechanistically, the authors identify in patients a loss of colonic expression of the HP1γ protein, a chromatin regulator of splicing. Overall, this study proposes a pathophysiological model centered on RNA metabolism, opening new therapeutic avenues for this disease.
