Science Extravaganza
Institut Necker Enfants Malades invites you to uncover the mysteries of science through interactive workshops. Dive into a vibrant array of hands-on activities, interactive exhibitions, and mind-boggling scientific demonstrations.
Come learn how researchers track aggressive cancer cells and observe proteins in action within our bodies. Join our escape game, "Rescue the Polycystic Kidney Biobank," and explore the beauty of the microscopic world. Investigate the microorganisms that inhabit us and discover why our gut bacteria are so fascinating. You can also participate in artistic activities with the Readymade-ART-Lab.
These sessions are designed to spark scientific curiosity in both young and old, with no prior knowledge required. So, gather your loved ones and join us for a day filled with discovery and fun learning!
PROGRAM
Workshop 1 - The Hunt for Aggressive Cancer Cells
Discover the mysteries of the cells that cause cancer. Where do they come from, and how can they be eliminated? Dive into cancer research by observing these unique cells under a microscope.
For ages 6 and up.
Sessions at 10:00 AM, 11:30 AM, 2:00 PM, and 3:30 PM, 8 people per session.
On-site registration.
Workshop 2 - Journey to the Heart of the Cell: Proteins in Action
Proteins are biological molecules that perform numerous functions to keep our cells healthy. Come discover a technique used daily in our lab that allows us to separate and analyze them. This method uses antibodies to unveil the mysteries of proteins, providing a detailed glimpse into the cellular machinery.
For ages 6 and up.
Sessions at 10:00 AM, 11:30 AM, 2:00 PM, and 3:30 PM, 10 people per session.
On-site registration.
Workshop 3 - Escape game - Rescue the Polycystic Kidney Biobank!
The team specializing in the mechanisms and therapy of kidney diseases is recruiting you, young researchers, to save our biobank filled with urine samples from patients with polycystic kidney disease. Join our lab for an escape game that will highlight the importance of interdisciplinary research in facilitating innovative discoveries and advancements in understanding chronic kidney diseases.
For ages 8 and up.
Sessions at 10:00 AM, 11:30 AM, 2:00 PM, and 3:30 PM, 5 people per session.
On-site registration.
Workshop 4 - Journey into the Beauty of the Micro-World
Admire the stunning structure of organs and the dynamic movement of cells through an exhibition of our finest photos and videos. Then, discover everyday objects in a new light with our digital microscope and a fun quiz. This unique visual and educational experience is not to be missed!
For ages 6 and up.

Workshop 5 - Investigation of the Tiny Creatures Inside Us
Bacteria are all around you and even inside you! Some species help ferment yogurt or sauerkraut, others form a harmonious partnership with your intestines, while some can make you ill. How can you tell them apart? Join us for an investigative game to discover which one is hiding under your microscope.
For ages 10 and up.
Sessions at 10:00 AM, 11:30 AM, 2:00 PM, and 3:30 PM, 8 people per session.
On-site registration.
Workshop 6 - Readymade-ART-Lab
Scientists are like artists, making amazing connections that lead to incredible discoveries. Join us at the Readymade-Art-Lab to explore the fascinating tools and materials used by scientists in their experiments. Together, we will create unique art objects from laboratory materials that you can take home to impress your friends and family!
For ages 10 and up.
Sessions at 110:00 AM, 11:30 AM, 2:00 PM, and 3:30 PM, 10-12 people per session.
On-site registration.
Workshop 7 - Who Would Have Thought Our Gut Bacteria Were So Interesting?
The gut microbiome consists of hundreds of different types of bacteria and can be considered an organ due to its many essential functions. Some, like the SFB bacteria, are even necessary for educating our immune system. This bacteria might seem scary and can make your intestines appear hairy, but without it, you're more susceptible to infections. Come uncover the secrets of this fascinating world!
For ages 8 and up.
Sessions at 10:00 AM, 11:30 AM, 2:00 PM, and 3:30 PM, 10 people per session.
On-site registration.
Workshop 8 - Inside the Lab: Unraveling the Secrets of a Gene
Would you like to dive into the daily life of a microbiology lab without having to wear a lab coat? Gather around the table, rearrange the available tools, and try to figure out which technique will help answer the question: what is the purpose of this gene?
